About

The Pleasure State is a network of offerings by sex educator and sound practitioner Montana Kimel, grounded in pleasure activism and its histories.

We believe everyone should have the freedom to safe sexual expression and exploration without shame. The Pleasure State is rooted in the fight for queer liberation, erotic independence, disability justice, and body sovereignty for all.
Pleasure is intrinsic, but it’s not always accessible. Many of us spend our lives feeling disconnected from our bodies because the stories we were told no longer resonate.  For this reason, somatic awareness and creative storytelling are at the core of what we do.

Behind the magic

Hi! I'm Montana Kimel, a queer Toronto-born holistic sex educator, sound practitioner, somatic sex educator in training, and artist.

Like many of us, I grew up inside cultural and interpersonal systems that tried to discipline bodies in the name of the status quo. I felt firsthand how desire was treated as dangerous or excessive, and suppressing my own desires started to take a toll on my life.

So, I flipped a switch and started following my desires instead of pushing them away. This path led me to somatic practices, sound, and holistic sex education. Along the way, I reconnected with my own embodied knowing.
Now, my work supports people in coming back into a relationship with their bodies.  In doing so, I honour the queer and trans ancestors who paved the way for the full, complex lives we now get to lead. My approach is trauma-aware, consent-based, and rooted in the belief that our bodies already hold the knowledge we’re searching for. I work with a wide range of bodies, and I prioritize softness and psychological safety in all of my sessions.

If this work speaks to you, I’d love to meet.

At the Pleasure State, we believe:

Reaching into our past allows us to understand our present.

Consent should be embodied and ongoing.

No metric can measure how attuned we are with our bodies.

Sex work is work.

Experiences of pleasure are as diverse and expansive as the plant species on this earth.

Nature is a generous lover.

Vanilla is an underrated and complex flavour.

Wanting more doesn't make you greedy.

Comfort food is a love language.

The field of sex education exists due to the unacknowledged labour of marginalized communities. In an effort to address this, we must speak to the lineages that inspire our work. A non-exhaustive  list of my influences includes:  adrienne maree brown, bell hooks, Emily Nagoski, Dr. Betty Martin, Caffyn Jesse, Elle Stranger, Patricia Hill Collins, Robin D. G. Kelley.

My current and past teachers include: Corinne Diachuck, Onika Henry, Katie Sparro, Serina Payan-Hazelwood, Dr. Roz Dischavo, Dr. Dionne Bensonsmith, Dr. Linda Perkins.
